Photo Albums Revisited – Flickr Bug Fix included

NickClubhosting News

westonka-flickrMany people have had an issue in the past with sharing photos on their club’s website. We offered a variety of ways to address that. Some were not so intuitive.

We finally settled on using Flickr’s easy upload features, then Flickr Gallery. But we found a conflict with the Adventure Theme that everyone uses, that broke navigation.

For You Flickr Users

To fix this glitch:
1) Go into Default Settings

  • Max Photos per page : 1
  • Sort Order (your choice, I like Random)
  • Photo Titles Off
  • Photo Descriptions Off
  • Number Of Columns : 1
  • Slideshow Behavior: Highslide
  • Background Color: Transparent
  • Gallery Width: Automatic
  • Disable Pagination? UNCHECKED (on)
  • Small Credit Note: No
  • SAVE CHANGES

2) Save the settings

3) Check existing galleries to make sure they use default settings for pagination, slider, etc.

4) Enter this into your Advanced Section:

[box style=”orange” ]

div.afg-pagination {display: none;}

[/box]

That will then enable pagination when in slideshow mode, but hide it on your photo page.

Now we have long tried many different layouts for Flickr. My favorite is the 2 column, where we show just 1 image max per page, 1 column, etc (in flickr default settings); then on the page itself, we use the Easy Column plugin/tags to split our paragraph into a Left and Right Column.

this is displayed best here

However, there is a simpler way. Bump up the Flickr Default Gallery Image size to the middle one (500-600 pixels if I recall).

Then all you need to worry about is adding a Title, and Pasting the Gallery Shortcode on the page (vs Finding spots in the column)

We tried this for Westonka Snowblazers’ Photo Album here.

What About ClubHosting Photo Albums?

Yes, you can still use your club hosting account to upload photos. We recently upgraded everyone’s package. To do this all you have to do is

  1. Click Add Media
  2. Drag and Drop (unless you’re using IE, if so – upgrade to make your life better)
  3. Create a Gallery, Check Some Photos, Insert Gallery

Now to better organize your galleries, especially if you do not want to have to use Flickr; We suggest making a post category called Photo Albums, then when you want to add to the photo Album, you Add a New Post in the Photos Category, drag your files over, insert gallery, publish.

Benefits of Flickr?

Yes this way is much easier, but we still encourage you to use Flickr for three reasons.

1) You will be able to have a Group Photo album pool if you have advanced Members.

2) Flickr has better Iphone/Droid apps. So trailside photo additions are much more likely – more is always better!

3) You wont eat up space. Let’s face it, we are generous with the space you get, but new cameras can take some big pics. So if you do not reduce the images, you will waste space, potentially costing your club extra money.

Now if you only upload 10-15 photos at a time, no big deal. If you are like me – 150-200 a quarter is much better, so yes, utilize flickr 🙂
